Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best way to start scuba diving?

The best way to start scuba diving is by enrolling in a certified beginner course like the PADI Open Water Diver. It combines knowledge development, a pool session, and guided ocean dives with the guidance of professional instructors.

Do I need to be a good swimmer to learn scuba diving?

You don’t need to be an expert swimmer, but you should be comfortable in water. The course requires a 200‑metre swim and a 10‑minute float to ensure basic water confidence.

How long does it take to get scuba certified?

Our standard Open Water course takes two days, with eLearning completed in advance. You’ll complete pool skills on day one and open‑water dives at suitable Sydney dive sites on day two.

Is scuba diving dangerous for beginners?

When properly trained and supervised, scuba diving is very safe. We follow PADI’s global safety standards and maintain a maximum of four students per instructor for individual attention.

What gear is included in the course?

All essential scuba equipment is included — including wetsuits, BCDs, tanks, regulators and dive computers. You’re welcome to purchase personal gear like masks or snorkels, but it’s optional.

How do I choose the right dive school?

Look for a PADI 5‑Star Career Development Centre with experienced instructors, small class sizes and excellent reviews. Abyss Scuba is the only one of its kind in NSW — and the winner of multiple PADI awards.

Can I take scuba lessons in Sydney year‑round?

Yes! Sydney offers great diving all year round. The calmest, clearest conditions often occur between April and September, when marine life is most abundant.

What certification will I receive?

As a certified scuba diver, you’ll earn the PADI Open Water Diver certification — the most widely accepted scuba qualification in the world. It allows you to dive to 18 metres with a buddy, anywhere in the world.
