Martin Island Seal Diving Season

The main Martin Island seal season is typically June to October. This is when larger numbers of Australian fur seals haul out on the island and divers usually get the best interactions.

July to September are usually the absolute best months for the highest seal numbers, the most playful interactions, the most reliable trips and classic seal season conditions.

  • Martin Island is much closer to Sydney than Montague Island.
  • Interactions are often extremely playful.
  • The dives are relatively shallow and energetic.
  • The season overlaps with humpback whale migration.

Unlike Montague Island, Martin Island is mainly a seasonal bachelor colony. Seals arrive as cooler water pushes north along the NSW coast, then numbers usually start dropping off by late October or November as the colony disperses south again.

  • Grey nurse sharks are calm and misunderstood animals. We treat them with respect.
  • Seals are playful, curious and still wild animals. Let them choose the interaction.
  • Good buoyancy and awareness protect the site and make the dive more enjoyable.
  • Abyss supports responsible, conservation-minded diving and marine education.

FAQ

Shark & Seal Diving Questions

Do I need to be certified?

Yes. Shark and seal scuba dives are for certified divers. Some shark dives are better suited to Advanced Open Water divers.

Which option is best for Open Water divers?

Sydney Seal Dives and selected Montague Island trips are usually the most natural first wildlife steps.

Which option needs Advanced Open Water?

Most Sydney shark dives, including Magic Point and Shell Harbour, are suitable for Open Water certified divers. Forster and some bigger adventure dives are better for Advanced Open Water divers or confident divers with recent experience.

What if I have not dived recently?

A refresher or easy guided local dive is the best first step before a bigger wildlife adventure.

Are shark or seal sightings guaranteed?

No. These are wild animals in natural environments, so sightings and behaviour cannot be guaranteed.
