Meet Fernando Ceballos Martínez – PADI Instructor and Sydney Diving Enthusiast

Fernando “Fer” Ceballos Martínez is a passionate PADI Instructor at Abyss Scuba Diving in Sydney. With a background in engineering and a love for the ocean, Fer combines precision, patience, and enthusiasm to help new divers discover the magic of the underwater world.

Experience and Qualifications

Fer began his scuba journey in 2017 with a Discover Scuba Dive in Playa Chica, Lanzarote. What started as a vacation experience quickly became a lifelong passion. After moving from Madrid to Australia in 2021, he reignited his love for diving during a trip to the Great Barrier Reef—an adventure that set him on the path to becoming a professional diver.

He has since explored some of the world’s most breathtaking dive destinations, including Raja Ampat in Indonesia, Vanuatu, Thailand, and Australia’s East Coast. In 2024, Fer earned his PADI Divemaster and Open Water Scuba Instructor certifications, joining the professional team at Abyss Scuba Diving to inspire the next generation of divers.

Favourite Sydney Dive Sites

When teaching or exploring locally, Fer loves Sydney’s iconic shore dives such as Bare Island, The Steps, and Oak Park. He enjoys introducing students to the diverse marine life Sydney has to offer—from weedy sea dragons and giant cuttlefish to playful blue groupers. His calm, encouraging teaching style makes new divers feel comfortable and confident, even on their very first descent.

Why I Love Teaching Diving

Fer believes that diving is as much about connection as it is about exploration. “The best part of teaching is watching someone’s face light up after their first dive,” he says. “It’s that pure moment of discovery that keeps me coming back.”

During the week, Fer works as an engineer, but his heart truly belongs underwater. Whether guiding students on their first bubbles or leading certified divers through Sydney’s reefs, he brings energy, professionalism, and a deep respect for the ocean to every dive.
