Experience and Qualifications

Originally from New Zealand, Jamie joined Abyss Scuba Diving in 2005 and quickly became an integral part of Sydney’s diving community. His career has taken him from the reefs of Fiji to remote technical diving expeditions across the Pacific, shaping his expertise in both recreational and advanced diving instruction.

In 2015, Jamie earned the coveted PADI Platinum Course Director status — an honour awarded to only around 50 instructors globally each year. He has since guided hundreds of divers through the Learn to Dive and Instructor Development pathways, helping many become dive centre owners, managers, and Course Directors themselves.

Jamie’s teaching philosophy is simple: “Diving should challenge you just enough to make you grow — but it should always be fun, safe, and inspiring.” His blend of technical expertise and calm, supportive instruction has made him one of the most trusted mentors in the Sydney diving scene.

Technical Diving Leadership

As the Technical Diving Manager at Abyss Scuba Diving, Jamie oversees advanced and rebreather training, ensuring the highest safety and performance standards. He holds instructor ratings across multiple PADI TecRec and Rebreather disciplines, including:

  • PADI Tec Deep Instructor
  • Sidemount and Advanced Rebreather Trainer
  • Hollis Explorer Instructor/Trainer
  • Adaptive Techniques and Dive Against Debris Instructor Trainer

Jamie is also an advocate for marine conservation through PADI’s Project AWARE initiatives and regularly mentors instructors in sustainable diving practices and ocean stewardship.

Favourite Sydney Dive Sites

Although he’s dived in some of the most exotic waters on earth, Jamie’s heart belongs to Sydney’s coastline. He’s most at home leading dives at Magic Point with its resident grey nurse sharks, exploring the SS Tuggerah wreck, or gliding over the sponge gardens at Bare Island. His deep local knowledge helps students understand both the technical and ecological aspects of each site.

Why Jamie Loves Teaching Diving

Jamie thrives on watching divers progress — from taking their first breaths underwater to becoming confident instructors themselves. “Every diver has their own rhythm,” he says. “My job is to help them find it — to build their confidence, refine their skills, and show them just how limitless the underwater world really is.”
