Meet Marcus Rimmeld – PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer and Sydney Dive Instructor
Marcus Rimmeld is a passionate PADI Instructor and Master Scuba Diver Trainer with Abyss Scuba Diving in Sydney. Known for his calm teaching style and contagious enthusiasm for marine life, Marcus helps new divers discover the beauty of Sydney’s underwater world every weekend.
Experience and Qualifications
Marcus began his diving journey at just 16 years old, earning his Advanced Open Water certification in Jervis Bay. After completing an Accounting Degree and starting a corporate career, he realised his true calling was beneath the surface. Through the Abyss Dive Internship, Marcus progressed from Divemaster in 2017 to PADI Open Water Instructor in 2019, and achieved his PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer status in 2020.
In addition to teaching in Sydney, Marcus has logged hundreds of dives around the world — from exploring WWII shipwrecks in Coron and encountering Thresher sharks in Malapascua, to diving between two tectonic plates in Silfra, Iceland. He has also worked aboard the renowned Mike Ball liveaboard Spoilsport on the Great Barrier Reef, guiding divers through some of Australia’s most iconic sites.
Favourite Sydney Dive Sites
Marcus loves Sydney’s mix of shore and boat diving. You’ll often find him exploring Bare Island, searching for his favourite local critter — the famous seahorse nicknamed “Golden Boy.” He’s also known for his fascination with cephalopods, often spending extra time admiring Sydney’s playful octopus and cuttlefish.
Why I Love Teaching Diving
“Every dive is a chance to see something new — and to share that with others,” Marcus says. “Helping students overcome their first-day nerves and seeing their confidence grow underwater is the best reward.”
Marcus’s teaching philosophy centres on patience, safety, and creating a relaxed environment where divers can truly enjoy the experience. Whether he’s teaching a PADI Advanced Open Water course or leading a fun dive, Marcus ensures every student walks away more skilled and more connected to the ocean.
Dive Adventures and Ocean Passion
When he’s not teaching in Sydney, Marcus can usually be found planning his next dive trip to a remote destination. His adventures have taken him from warm tropical reefs to icy glacier lakes, always with a sense of curiosity and respect for the marine world. A self-confessed “Blue Planet” addict, Marcus draws inspiration from David Attenborough’s storytelling and believes that every diver plays a role in ocean conservation.
