The Moso marine-life story
Ten dives shaped by Moso’s reefs, currents and marine life
Each day opens a different chapter of Moso’s underwater world. The flexible 10-dive program can draw from signature sites around Moso Island, Havannah Harbour, Hat Island and north-west Efate, where reefs, walls, swim-throughs, drifts and blue-water edges bring opportunities to see turtles, rays, sharks, schooling fish and smaller reef life. The local team selects the best sites and profiles for the weather, current, visibility and divers on the boat.
Paul’s Rock
An oval reef where coral trout, trevally, surgeonfish and turtles may move between the reef top and the wall, with guide-approved swim-throughs when they suit the group.
Owen’s Reef
A broad reef known for its diversity of coral and fish. Shallow sections, overhangs and several possible routes give the guide options for different experience levels.
Hat Island
Reef tops, walls, gorgonians and open-water edges create several distinct dives, with reef fish below and the possibility of rays or pelagic life passing through.
M.V. Belama
This compact island freighter near Owen’s Reef adds a fascinating change of scene to the week, with the route matched to each diver’s certification and recent experience.
Bottle Fish Cave
Large grouper and wrasse share rocky structure with bottles and crockery locally associated with wartime activity, while smaller critters reward a slower look. Any swim-through remains guide-led and suitability-dependent.
Moso Drift
When the tide and group are right, this is the place to watch blue water for reef sharks, schooling barracuda, eagle rays and other passing pelagic life.
After dark
Subject to the final operating plan, one of the 10 dives may take place after sunset, revealing nocturnal reef behaviour and creatures missed by day. It remains dependent on conditions, logistics and diver suitability.

The marine-life watchlist
The biggest moment may be the least predictable
Moso’s strength is the variety of life moving through its reefs, seagrass and blue water. A dugong or a passing group of spinetail devil rays could become the defining moment of the holiday, while turtles offer the strongest bucket-list prospect across the week. Reef fish, nudibranchs and other small creatures reward divers who slow down and look closely between the big encounters.
Turtles lead the list
Hawksbill and green turtles are locally reported on many dives, giving a 10-dive week repeated opportunities for a memorable encounter while every turtle remains free-ranging.
Rays, sharks & schooling fish
Outer reefs and current-fed sites may bring spinetail devil rays, spotted eagle rays, reef sharks or schooling barracuda. The selected sites, tides and luck determine what passes through.
Dugong & leopard shark
Dugongs use Havannah Harbour’s seagrass habitat, while a leopard shark remains an exciting outside chance. Either would be remarkable; neither is an expected sighting.
The life between big encounters: colourful reef fish, groupers, wrasse, nudibranchs and other small creatures give every dive something worth slowing down for.
Wildlife remains wild: the gallery shows possibilities, not a guaranteed checklist. The final site mix, tides, weather and free-ranging animals decide what appears. Dugongs are protected; any incidental sighting will follow local guide instructions and responsible interaction practices, and no dedicated dugong activity is included. Travelling on your own?
You are welcome to join the trip even if you don’t bring your own dive buddy. Standard buddy procedures still apply, with suitable buddy pairings organized as part of the group.
Mixed-experience groups
Friends, couples and clubmates can share one holiday while the dive team matches routes and profiles to conditions, certification and experience.
Preparation with Abyss
Ask Abyss about equipment planning, refresher diving or an Advanced course pathway before departure. Any training or equipment not listed in the package is arranged separately.
Suitability still matters: certification, recent diving, medical fitness and equipment needs must be confirmed with Abyss before departure. A named site may be changed or withheld for an individual diver when its conditions or profile are not suitable.

Are the return Sydney flights included?
Yes. Return flights from Sydney to Port Vila and applicable airline and Australian departure taxes are included in the current package. Final airline, flight times and baggage allowance will be confirmed after ticketing.
What diving and equipment are included?
The package includes 10 guided boat dives over five planned dive days, single tanks, weights, dive-guide services and between-dive snacks. Nitrox fills are included for Nitrox-certified divers. Confirm any other equipment needs before travel.
What makes the Moso diving special?
The variety. Across 10 boat dives, possible highlights range from coral gardens, walls, swim-throughs and drift diving to turtles, rays, sharks, schooling fish and colourful small critters. M.V. Belama may add a compact freighter site when conditions and diver suitability align.
Can I join as an Open Water diver or if I’m travelling on my own?
Suitable Open Water divers, recent graduates and guests travelling on their own are welcome, subject to Abyss confirming certification, recent diving, confidence and medical fitness. Each site and profile will be matched to the diver’s certification, preparation and experience.
Can Abyss help me prepare or progress toward Advanced?
Yes. Ask Abyss about equipment planning, refresher diving or an Advanced course pathway before departure. Training and equipment are not included unless separately confirmed in writing.
Which meals and activities are included?
Breakfast is included daily and snacks are provided between dives. A village visit and kava-bar evening are planned. Other meals, drinks, snacks and activities are purchased separately.
Is a New Year’s Eve event guaranteed?
The fixed departure lets the Abyss group welcome 2027 together in Vanuatu. Any organised party, venue, dinner or other New Year’s Eve activity will be confirmed in the final itinerary rather than promised in advance.
Are the named dive sites or wildlife guaranteed?
No. Paul’s Rock, Owen’s Reef, Hat Island, M.V. Belama, Bottle Fish Cave, Moso Drift and a possible night dive form a flexible menu rather than a fixed sequence. Site selection follows weather, current, local advice and diver suitability. Turtles, dugongs, spinetail devil rays and other wildlife are free-ranging; no encounter or swim is guaranteed.
