AI and the Future of Dive Instructors
AI may take routine work off an instructor’s desk and help more people discover diving. Teaching, judgement and responsibility still belong to a person.
People often ask whether artificial intelligence will replace scuba instructors. My view is that it is more likely to change the work around them. Software can organise information, but a qualified instructor still has to teach, observe, reassure and make the final call in the water.
For me, the opportunity is more practical than the promise of extra leisure time. It could start with less admin, better-prepared students, more personal service and better follow-up. Over time, new work may grow around conservation, underwater imaging, sensors and marine technology.

The short answer
AI is more likely to help a good dive instructor than replace one. Used well, it could save time for the work that matters most: teaching, reassurance, judgement and safe decisions in the water. The career benefit appears only when saved time becomes better service, new work, higher pay or more bookings.
- The human core remains: demonstration, supervision, judgement, reassurance and responsibility in the water.
- The near-term opportunity is time: less administration and better-prepared students.
- The growth opportunity is demand: easier discovery, booking, access and continued participation.
- The longer-term upside is wider work: conservation, underwater imagery, field data and marine technology.
What “AI” means here: generative AI helps with language and administration; machine learning can analyse data and images; autonomous systems can help control underwater vehicles. Evidence about one does not automatically apply to the others.
Within PADI training, AI can also mean Assistant Instructor—a separate professional rating. The research below supports current use cases and plausible scenarios. It does not yet prove that AI has increased dive bookings, instructor pay, diver retention or leisure time.
Will AI replace dive instructors?
Current generative AI is unlikely to replace the core work of an instructor. Look at what happens on a dive course. Software can search, summarise, translate and schedule.
It cannot see that a student is becoming anxious, adjust a demonstration or step in before a small problem becomes serious. Most importantly, it cannot accept responsibility for the final decision.

One labour-market index points the same way. In 2025, the International Labour Organization put “Fitness and Recreation Instructors and Programme Leaders” in its “Not Exposed” category for current generative AI. Its occupation classification includes underwater diving instructors in that group.1
This is a broad group rating, not a study of individual dive instructors. It covers potential exposure to today’s generative AI. It does not predict robotics, job growth or permanent job security.
Jobs and Skills Australia also examined the wider workforce. It found generative AI more likely to support human work than replace it, while noting that it may automate some routine tasks.2 The study did not examine dive instructors directly. Applying that pattern here is an informed judgement.
After more than 30 years in diving and teaching, I know a course rarely runs exactly as it looks on paper. A student may become anxious, a skill may not click, or conditions may make the original plan unsuitable. AI can help us prepare; it cannot take responsibility in the water.
Fourteen ways AI could expand a dive instructor career
From the practical end of the dive industry, I can see fourteen ways AI could create more or better work for instructors. Some can help now. Others depend on customer demand, useful tools and wider changes to income, working hours and marine technology. This is an organising framework, not a forecast.
1 Better matching for new divers
Conversational search can connect a person’s interests—seadragons, sharks, photography, fitness, family adventure, wrecks or conservation—to a suitable first dive, course, refresher or specialty. Better matching could create enquiries without relying on a generic discount.
2 Easier planning and booking
Booking a dive has more steps than many leisure activities. Customers need clear information about course requirements, dates, gear, transport, forms and the plan for the day. A human-supervised assistant can answer routine questions at any hour and collect missing details. Anything medical, unusual or safety-sensitive must go to a qualified person.
OECD tourism research identifies personalised planning, multilingual chatbots, accessible content, customer engagement and AI-assisted booking as practical uses.3
3 Better language and access support
AI can translate ordinary pre-arrival information, create captions and audio, simplify complex language and provide extra explanations. It can also help people describe access needs before arriving. Safety-critical wording still needs verified source material and qualified human review. AI should never decide whether somebody is medically fit to dive.
4 More personal learning support
An instructor-approved tutor can revisit a difficult concept and explain it another way. It may also flag theory gaps before a student, Divemaster or instructor candidate begins training. That leaves the educator more time for judgement, hands-on skills and confidence.
5 Less instructor admin
Enquiries, schedules, forms, records, routine emails, lesson drafts, manifests and follow-up can consume the time around a course. AI can prepare drafts, flag missing details and organise information.
It may return some time to students, professional development, paid teaching or recovery. Setup, checking, privacy controls, errors and software costs can offset part of the saving.
6 Better planning for courses and trips
Forecasting tools can compare booking history, seasons, weather, holidays and booking lead times. A smarter waitlist could refill a cancelled place with a suitable diver. With reliable data and human oversight, better planning may reduce empty places and make instructor work more consistent.
7 Keeping certified divers active
At Abyss, we do not want to certify someone and never see them again. With consent and privacy controls, AI can flag that a diver may need human review before returning. It can also suggest a next skill or local dive that suits their experience and interests. The instructor stays involved as a coach.
8 Better coaching and premium services
Better preparation can make private coaching more focused. Instructor-edited debriefs, personal development plans, small-group clinics, curated travel and media packages may increase the value of each customer relationship. AI could reduce some admin, but the instructor supplies the trust and experience people pay for.
9 More support for small operators
An independent instructor may use AI for translation, customer follow-up, bookkeeping drafts, supplier comparisons and trip logistics. It may also help with portfolios and job searches. This could support a mixed career across teaching, guiding, travel, equipment, media and conservation.
10 Real underwater experiences stand out
As office work, entertainment and online content become more automated, physical and social experiences connected to nature may feel more distinctive. A dive instructor does not merely deliver information. The instructor helps someone do something real that they could not safely or confidently do alone.
11 More income available for diving
If AI raises real wages or lowers the cost of other goods and services, some households may spend more on training, equipment, travel, private instruction and liveaboards. The gains are unlikely to be even. People who receive the largest income benefit may particularly increase demand for premium, technical and destination diving.
12 More usable leisure time
Employers may convert some AI productivity into four-day weeks, paid leave, compressed fortnights or earlier retirement. That could give more people the uninterrupted time needed for a course, weekday charter or dive holiday. A predictable day off is more valuable to diving than a few minutes saved inside each working day.
13 Instructor-led conservation services
Where customers, researchers or funders support it, instructors could run conservation dives and workshops. They can teach standardised image and data collection, supervise the dive and check field skills.
ReefCloud already analyses uploaded images. Established citizen-science programs also use trained divers to make standardised observations.4 Turning that activity into paid instruction is a commercial possibility, not a measured outcome.
14 New roles in marine technology
AI image tools, sensors and underwater vehicles all need good field data. Dive professionals could help plan missions, handle approved equipment, keep divers clear of vehicles and check image quality.
A NOAA-funded project tested AI animal detection and tracking on an ROV and AUV during 2024–25. It is also adding labelled imagery to the FathomNet database.5 This shows the technology, not an established instructor labour market.

The timing matters. Some uses work today. Others rely on better tools, customer demand or wider economic change.

Will AI really give people more leisure time?
My starting thought was simple: if AI gives people more leisure time, more of them may learn to dive and dive more often. I still think that is possible, but it is not automatic.
AI can save minutes on a task without shortening the paid working week. Employers may increase output, workers may favour higher income, or expectations may rise.
This historical benchmark is not an AI forecast. The Productivity Commission estimated that Australians used about 23% of productivity gains since 1980 to work less and 77% as higher income.6 Both outcomes could help diving, but in different ways:
- Shorter weeks with income preserved: potentially the strongest result for courses, local weekday diving and travel.
- Flexible or compressed schedules: useful even if annual working hours do not fall, because diving needs predictable blocks of time.
- Higher real incomes: useful for equipment, private instruction and holidays, although time can remain the limiting factor.
- Job displacement without income security: not leisure demand. Free time without confidence or disposable income may reduce spending.
More leisure is possible rather than certain. It depends on wages, paid leave, control over working hours and who receives the gains.
The dive market is already substantial. A 2025 peer-reviewed study, using mainly pre-pandemic operator data, estimated 8.9–13.6 million divers and snorkellers worldwide. It estimated about 28,000 jobs in the low season and 124,000 in the high season, including full- and part-time roles.7
The authors call this a first global estimate and warn that older inputs and extrapolation create uncertainty. Even a modest lift in participation could still matter.
Possible AI-supported and adjacent roles
The profession may expand in scope as well as in the number of courses taught. These are illustrative role concepts—not established occupations, evidence of vacancies or promises of jobs. Some existed before today’s AI tools; AI may change or expand them.
Citizen-science expedition leader
Teach a standard survey method, supervise data-collection dives and turn the results into an educational experience.
Photogrammetry instructor
Teach repeatable image capture for 3D reef, wreck or habitat models and verify field quality.
Marine-image data manager
Manage labels, image quality and records, then spot-check samples so AI systems receive dependable inputs.
Biodiversity survey coach
Combine species-identification training, standardised observations and AI-assisted post-dive review.
Sensor and logger field operator
Deploy, recover and maintain approved temperature, water-quality or acoustic devices.
Underwater-robot field support
Support mission planning, deployment, recovery, diver separation, field-data checks and public interpretation.
Adaptive-diving specialist
Combine recognised adaptive techniques with accessible preparation and carefully planned human support.
Underwater data storyteller
Turn imagery and monitoring results into accurate stories for divers, schools, destinations and sponsors.
AI quality and safety lead
Maintain approved sources, test assistants, record errors, protect data and set the decisions AI cannot make.
Senior remote mentor
Extend an experienced instructor’s career through theory clinics, staff mentoring, standards checks and course-material review.
Many roles will require extra scientific, technical, occupational-diving, public-safety or accessibility qualifications. In NSW, paid underwater work can trigger specific diving-work competency requirements. A recreational instructor rating is not enough for every scientific or commercial task.9 Always check the work, jurisdiction and current rules.
How to prepare for an AI-supported dive career
Do not try to beat AI at producing generic information. Build the skills current systems cannot independently or responsibly bring to the water: calm judgement, clear demonstrations, empathy and local knowledge. Then learn enough AI to use it safely.
Human skills that remain valuable
- Excellent watermanship and demonstration-quality diving skills
- Calm observation, student control and conservative judgement
- Clear explanations for people with different confidence and learning needs
- Empathy, patience, motivation and trust
- Local site, conditions, marine-life and operational knowledge
- Leadership, teamwork and reliable professional conduct
How dive instructors can use AI today
- Use approved, current sources instead of relying on a model’s memory
- Check every output that affects standards, learning or customer commitments
- Know when to escalate a question to an instructor, doctor, technician or manager
- Protect customer privacy, particularly medical, location, video and performance data
- Measure whether a tool reduces workload, improves learning or creates more bookings
- Learn one useful adjacent capability such as photography, survey methods, accessibility, data handling or marine technology
Safety-critical decisions that stay with qualified people
- Medical assessment and any required clearance: a qualified medical practitioner
- Certification and competence: the authorised instructor or assessor
- In-water supervision and intervention: the qualified dive professional
- Equipment service and sign-off: the competent technician
- Incident command and emergency response: the responsible team and operator
- Final site and go or no-go decisions: the responsible instructor, skipper, supervisor or operator
What this means for a new diving career in Sydney and Australia
Future instructors will not build a career by repeating a manual or online course. Information will keep getting easier to find. The real value lies in turning it into skill, confidence, sound judgement and a reason to keep diving.
Around Botany Bay, a forecast is the start of the decision, not the end. Swell, visibility, boat traffic and the group in front of you all affect the day’s plan. AI can help with preparation, but the instructor at the site still makes the call.
The pathway still begins with real diving experience and professional training. PADI—the Professional Association of Diving Instructors—describes Divemaster as its first professional-level certification and the usual foundation for instructor development.8

AI and dive-instructor career FAQs
Will AI replace scuba-diving instructors?
Current generative AI is unlikely to replace the core work of a dive instructor. It can support planning, admin and theory. A qualified person must still demonstrate skills, observe students, supervise dives, assess competence, intervene and accept responsibility for decisions.
Could AI create more demand for dive instructors?
Potentially. AI may make discovery, planning and booking easier. Wider productivity gains could also become higher incomes or more flexible work. None of this is guaranteed; demand depends on how the gains are shared and how well dive businesses use the tools.
How can a dive instructor use AI today?
AI can help draft routine replies, translate ordinary customer information, flag missing form fields, prepare lesson outlines, create practice questions and organise trip details. A person should check every output. Medical, certification, equipment and operational decisions stay with qualified people.
What new careers could combine diving and AI?
Possible role concepts include photogrammetry instruction, citizen-science leadership, marine-image data management, biodiversity surveys, sensor work, underwater-robot support, data storytelling and AI quality assurance. These are not established job categories, and scientific, occupational or public-safety work may require extra qualifications.
Is PADI Divemaster the same as a dive instructor?
No. PADI Divemaster is the first professional-level rating and focuses on dive leadership, supervising certified divers and assisting instructors. A PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor has completed instructor development and the required examination pathway, and can teach within the rating’s scope and current standards.
What skills will future dive instructors need most?
Watermanship, observation, calm judgement, teaching, empathy, local knowledge and leadership remain central. Instructors may also benefit from AI literacy, source checking, privacy awareness and an adjacent skill such as photography, conservation surveys, accessibility, data handling or marine technology.
My view on the future of dive instruction
My view is simple: AI will change the work around dive instruction, not the need for a good instructor in the water. The professionals most likely to benefit will pair strong water skills and local judgement with careful use of AI for planning, communication and student support.
