What Diving Avelo Actually Feels Like Underwater

Why trained divers describe a closer-fitting, more stable and less distracting dive—and which parts remain entirely in the diver’s hands.

Most trained divers first notice a system that sits close to the body and needs fewer depth-related buoyancy corrections. That combination can create the smooth, uncluttered sensation people call “flying underwater”. The experience is real for many divers, but it is subjective—Avelo remains a manual life-support system that requires specific training and active control.

Why the sensation changes

The “freedom” comes from stability and less equipment movement

A conventional BCD uses an air cell that compresses on descent and expands on ascent. Avelo instead uses surrounding water as adjustable ballast. The diver pumps water into the Hydrotank to become heavier and releases it through a mechanical purge to become lighter.

Because that water does not appreciably change volume with pressure, a selected buoyancy setting remains more stable across depth changes. Combine that with a rig designed to sit close to the body and the underwater experience may feel quieter: fewer corrections, less movement around the torso and more attention available for the dive.

Before entry

The setup can feel less bulky, but it is not weightless

Avelo may reduce the total load compared with some conventional cylinder, BCD and lead combinations. The difference depends on the exact equipment, exposure protection and weighting being compared, and the complete system still requires safe lifting and handling.

At the surface

The procedures are different from a BCD inflator

Priming, entry and positive surface buoyancy use Avelo-specific procedures. They must be learned with an instructor rather than inferred from experience on conventional scuba equipment.

On descent

You add water and remain responsible for the descent

The pump makes the complete system heavier. You still equalise, monitor depth, communicate with your buddy, maintain control and stop the descent when required.

At depth

The stable setting may reduce repeated corrections

Once neutral, many divers notice less need to operate a buoyancy control as depth changes. Breathing, trim, exposure-suit compression, carried equipment and gas consumption can still affect total buoyancy.

While moving

A close fit may make swimming feel more fluid

Lower drag and less equipment movement can improve comfort and manoeuvrability. Good trim and efficient finning remain learned skills; the system cannot create them for the diver.

During ascent

You purge manually and control every metre

Avelo does not initiate, slow or stop an ascent automatically. The diver follows trained purge, breathing, monitoring, safety-stop and surface procedures.

What Avelo does not promise

The old article confused a distinctive experience with guaranteed performance and safety. Those are not the same thing.

Avelo removes the large expanding BCD air cell from the configuration, but it does not remove risk. The diver still needs appropriate weighting, equipment checks, gas planning, buddy procedures, awareness and controlled ascents.

Avelo’s current user manual also says the system is not a life jacket and must not be relied upon to create emergency positive buoyancy or to initiate or sustain an emergency ascent.

  • No perfect or constant buoyancy. Water ballast is stable, while lungs, exposure suits, gas use and equipment can still change total buoyancy.
  • No automatic depth control. The diver chooses and operates every adjustment.
  • No universal kilogram saving. The comparison depends on the conventional setup, diver and exposure protection.
  • No guaranteed gas saving. Lower drag and workload may help some divers, but breathing rate and dive time remain individual.
  • No elimination of ascent risk. Manual control, training and monitoring remain essential.
  • No extension of certification limits. Avelo training does not qualify a diver for deeper, overhead, technical or other specialised environments.

Feedback, not autopilot

What Avelo Mode and Avelo Edge add to the experience

Compatible dive computers can display Avelo Mode information during the dive, including the calculated stable-neutral zone and indications related to workload and efficiency. Avelo Edge provides post-dive analysis that can help a diver and instructor discuss stability, workload and progression.

Neither tool pumps or purges water, holds depth or replaces a normal instrument scan. They add information; the diver remains responsible for buoyancy, gas, depth, time, ascent rate and the dive plan.

Avelo Mode can increase awareness of the system and the diver’s performance during a dive.

Comparable feedback can help identify patterns, but improvement still depends on practice and coaching.

A personal equipment decision

Who may appreciate the Avelo experience?

There is no universal “best” scuba system. The useful question is whether Avelo solves a real problem in your diving and whether you can train, hire, fill and service it where you dive.

Some divers value the reduced depth-related corrections, close fit and potential reduction in carried equipment. Photographers and task-focused divers may appreciate a steadier working platform. Other divers prefer the availability, familiarity or specialist configurations of conventional equipment.

The best comparison is a properly supervised Avelo course followed by several suitable dives—not a specification sheet or someone else’s percentage claim.

Avelo may be worth trying if you…

  • want fewer depth-related buoyancy corrections;
  • value a close-fitting, streamlined configuration;
  • enjoy performance feedback and structured coaching;
  • can access trained support, equipment and fills; and
  • are willing to learn system-specific procedures.

Consider the trade-offs if you…

  • regularly travel where Avelo hire is unavailable;
  • need a specialised configuration for planned diving;
  • prefer equipment that any operator can readily supply;
  • cannot access compatible servicing and fills; or
  • expect the equipment to replace buoyancy skill.

Does diving Avelo really feel like flying underwater?

Many trained divers use that description because the system sits close to the body and water ballast remains stable across depth changes. It is a subjective sensation, not literal weightlessness or automatic buoyancy.

Does Avelo hold my depth automatically?

No. The diver manually pumps water into the Hydrotank or releases it through the purge, then controls the dive using breathing, trim, awareness and the procedures learned during Avelo training.

Is Avelo always 14 kg lighter than conventional scuba?

No universal saving applies. The difference depends on the cylinder, BCD, harness, lead, exposure protection and other equipment being compared. Avelo can reduce the total burden for some divers, but it remains a substantial life-support system.

Will Avelo reduce my gas consumption or make every dive longer?

Not automatically. Lower drag, fewer corrections and reduced workload may help some divers, but gas use and dive duration still depend on breathing, depth, exertion, temperature, conditions, no-decompression limits and the dive plan.

Does Avelo eliminate the risk of a rapid ascent?

No. Removing the expanding BCD air cell changes an important buoyancy mechanism, but exposure suits, breathing, weighting, control inputs and diver behaviour still matter. Training, monitoring and a controlled manual ascent remain essential.

Do Avelo Mode or Avelo Edge control buoyancy?

No. Avelo Mode displays compatible in-dive information, while Avelo Edge provides post-dive analysis. They support awareness and coaching; the diver remains in control of the system.

Can I hire Avelo equipment without taking the course?
