Mastering Breath-Hold Diving: A Safety-First Guide to Freediving

Longer and deeper are not the first goals. Sound freediving begins with direct buddy supervision, normal relaxed breathing, gentle equalisation, efficient movement and the judgement to turn early.

Breath-hold diving, usually called freediving, is underwater diving on a single breath. It combines relaxation, equalisation, streamlined movement, environmental awareness and disciplined safety procedures. Good training may improve comfort and efficiency, but no amount of experience makes hypoxic blackout predictable or solo freediving safe.

What breath-hold diving actually involves

Recreational freedivers may explore a reef, follow a training line or quietly observe marine life. Unlike snorkelling, freediving includes purposeful breath-hold descents and ascents. Unlike scuba, it does not provide breathing gas underwater. The diver must return to the surface within the limits of that breath while managing pressure, movement and the environment.

The body’s diving response can slow heart rate and redirect circulation towards vital organs. It helps conserve oxygen, but it does not prevent loss of motor control or blackout. The safest mindset is not “How long can I stay?” but “Can I complete this dive comfortably, conservatively and with effective supervision?”

WHAT TO DEVELOP FIRST

Five foundations of better freediving

Progress comes mainly from reducing unnecessary work and making better decisions. These foundations are developed progressively with an instructor and then practised with a suitably trained buddy.

Relaxed preparation

Settle your breathing and mind without rapid, forceful or repeated deep breaths. Deliberate hyperventilation is not a performance tool—it removes a warning while oxygen continues to fall.

Efficient movement

Streamlining, balanced body position and economical finning reduce drag and oxygen use more safely than fighting for extra seconds at the end of a dive.

Early, gentle equalisation

Equalise before discomfort develops. If an ear, sinus or the chest hurts—or equalisation stops working—end the descent. Never force through pain.

Reliable recovery

Finish with enough reserve to complete the ascent and the recovery procedure taught in your course. Your buddy remains close and attentive after you surface.

Conservative judgement

Turn before technique deteriorates. Depth and time should suit your training, recent practice, conditions, health and the strength of the safety team.

WHY THE BUDDY MUST KEEP WATCHING

Blackout can occur near the surface—or just after it

During a breath hold, oxygen falls while carbon dioxide rises. The urge to breathe is strongly influenced by carbon dioxide, so it is not a dependable measure of how much oxygen remains. Deliberate hyperventilation lowers carbon dioxide and may delay that urge without adding meaningful oxygen, increasing the chance of an unexpected hypoxic event.

On ascent, falling pressure causes the oxygen available to the brain to drop rapidly. A diver may show loss of motor control—sometimes called a “samba”—or lose consciousness during the final ascent or shortly after reaching the surface. Both are serious hypoxic events.

NON-NEGOTIABLE PRACTICE

Six rules for every recreational freedive

  1. Use a trained, rescue-capable buddy. Only one diver breath-holds at a time. The buddy knows the plan, watches directly, meets the ascending diver as taught and remains attentive for at least 30 seconds after surfacing.
  2. Never deliberately hyperventilate. Rapid breathing, repeated deep breaths, “cleansing breaths” and “work-up breathing” can all lower carbon dioxide and suppress the urge to breathe.
  3. Allow a proper surface interval. As a basic minimum, remain on the surface for at least three times the preceding dive duration and longer after deeper or demanding dives. Follow any more conservative rule from your course or instructor.
  4. Stay conservatively weighted. Be positively buoyant at the surface, use a quick-release system and have the weighting checked for the wetsuit, water and planned depth. Never overweight to make descent easier.
  5. Plan the environment, not only the depth. Visibility, current, swell, cold, boat traffic, entanglement, entries and exits can turn a simple dive into a difficult one. Use a suitable float and flag where required.
  6. End early when anything changes. Stop for pain, difficulty equalising, unusual fatigue, coughing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, confusion or declining technique. Do not make “one more dive” to prove a point.

TRAIN SKILL, NOT SUFFERING

How beginners can improve without dangerous shortcuts

A qualified course introduces the physiology and safety system before asking for performance. In confined water, students learn supervised static apnea, dynamic apnea, preparation and recovery procedures, buddy positioning and rescue skills. Open-water training adds line orientation, free immersion, constant weight, equalisation and controlled progression.

Downloaded CO₂ or O₂ tables, maximum breath holds and apnea walks are not safe beginner substitutes for instruction. They may change how discomfort is perceived, but they cannot make low oxygen predictable or remove blackout risk. Any in-water apnea requires dedicated, trained supervision.

SIMPLE, SUITABLE, WELL FITTED

Essential equipment for recreational freediving

Specialist equipment can improve comfort and efficiency, but fit and safe configuration matter more than the most expensive material. Beginners do not need carbon fins, a neck weight or competition equipment to start.

Conditions can matter more than your breath hold

Sydney freediving can involve swell, surge, current, cool water, variable visibility, shore entries and boat traffic. A site that feels easy on one day can require a very different plan on another.

Choose the site for the day

Match exposure, depth, entry and exit to the least experienced person—not to the strongest diver’s target.

Stay visible

Use the appropriate float and flag, remain aware of boats and keep the team close enough for direct supervision.

Protect the exit

Keep enough energy and warmth for the return swim and exit. Stop before cold, swell or fatigue erodes the safety margin.

THE SAFEST WAY TO BEGIN

What the PADI Freediver course teaches

Abyss’s current beginner course combines PADI eLearning with confined-water training and two instructor-supervised ocean sessions, conditions permitting. It teaches breath-hold physiology, normal preparation and recovery, equalisation, efficient movement, direct buddy supervision and response to loss of motor control or blackout.

Knowledge development

Allow approximately four to six hours for PADI eLearning covering physiology, equipment, techniques, safety rules and buddy procedures.

Confined water

Complete the required swim and develop supervised static and dynamic apnea, recovery breathing, buddy procedures and basic rescue skills.

Instructor-led ocean sessions

Conditions permitting, practise free immersion, constant weight, line use, equalisation, buddy supervision and open-water rescue under instructor control.

Entry requirements

Abyss currently requires age 15+, water comfort and a continuous 200 m swim—or 300 m with mask, fins and snorkel. Complete the participant medical questionnaire and obtain written medical clearance if directed.

EXPERIENCE BEFORE NUMBERS

Recreational freediving does not need to imitate competition

Competitive freediving uses defined disciplines, performance rules and specialist safety teams. Recreational freediving can be much simpler: a controlled descent, a quiet marine-life encounter and an unhurried return to the surface. You do not need to chase a record for the dive to be meaningful.

Remain a respectful visitor underwater. Do not touch, chase, corner or feed wildlife. Keep enough awareness for your buddy, surroundings and ascent rather than allowing a photograph or animal encounter to consume the safety margin.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Breath-hold diving FAQ

How long should a beginner be able to hold their breath?

There is no universal safe benchmark, and a relaxed dry breath hold is not comparable with swimming underwater. Do not use somebody else’s time—or a course performance objective—to decide how long it is safe to remain submerged. Beginners should focus on technique, supervision and comfortable progression.

Can I practise breath holding alone in a shallow pool or bath?

No. Hypoxic loss of motor control or blackout can occur in shallow water and without a dependable warning. Every in-water breath hold needs a suitably trained, attentive buddy using direct supervision. A general pool lifeguard does not replace that buddy.

Why is hyperventilation dangerous?

Hyperventilation lowers carbon dioxide and can delay the urge to breathe without meaningfully increasing the body’s oxygen store. Oxygen may then fall below the level needed for consciousness before the diver feels an urgent warning.

What should I do if my ears will not equalise?

Stop the descent. Move slightly shallower and use the gentle method taught by your instructor. If equalisation does not return easily—or there is pain—end that descent. Never force your ears or continue through discomfort.

Can deep or repetitive freediving cause narcosis or decompression sickness?

These are not the primary risks for ordinary beginner freediving, but they are credible concerns during deep, repetitive exposures—especially with short surface intervals. Advanced depth training needs specialist instruction, conservative progression and a more capable safety system.

Can I freedive immediately after scuba diving?

No. Residual inert gas from scuba can add risk when followed by pressure changes during freediving. Plan substantial separation between the activities and follow current guidance from your training organisation, dive computer and instructor. When in doubt, place them on different days.

Do beginners need long carbon-fibre fins?

No. Comfortable, well-fitted plastic freediving fins are a practical starting point. Technique and suitable blade stiffness matter more than buying the lightest or most expensive material.
