Start freediving in Sydney

Choose training that matches where you are now

Freediving is underwater diving on a single breath. Good training is not simply about holding your breath for longer or chasing depth. It brings together relaxation, efficient movement, equalisation, recovery breathing, direct buddy supervision and rescue skills.

This page is the starting point for comparing Abyss freediving courses in Sydney. New freedivers can begin with the full PADI Freediver Course; certified freedivers can progress to Advanced Freediver or continue with coached training. When you are ready to choose a date, the dedicated course page contains the live schedule, remaining places and booking checkout.

The beginner course

What PADI Freediver training involves

The PADI Freediver Course combines independent knowledge development with practical coaching. Allow about four to six hours for eLearning before the in-water weekend. The course is normally scheduled over two practical days, but certification depends on completing the required knowledge, safety and water-skill objectives.

1

PADI eLearning

Study equipment, physiology, preparation, equalisation, safety and buddy procedures before practical training.

2

Confined-water training

Practise preparation and recovery breathing, static and dynamic apnea, buddy supervision and rescue skills in a controlled environment.

3

Two ocean sessions

Apply equalisation, free immersion, constant weight, line orientation, buddy procedures and rescue skills under instructor supervision, conditions permitting.

Technique, awareness and safety

What you learn on a freediving course

The aim is controlled, repeatable skill—not a one-off personal best. Your instructor adapts practical training to conditions, student readiness and safe progression.

01

Prepare and recover

Use relaxed preparation and effective recovery breathing without deliberate hyperventilation.

02

Move efficiently

Develop body position, streamlined finning, duck dives, turns and controlled movement.

03

Equalise correctly

Equalise early and gently, and learn when to stop a descent rather than forcing through discomfort.

04

Practise apnea skills

Train static and dynamic apnea under direct supervision using the required procedures.

05

Dive on a line

Learn free immersion and constant-weight techniques during instructor-supervised ocean sessions.

06

Support and rescue a buddy

Practise one-up, one-down supervision and responses to loss of motor control or blackout.

Why train with Abyss?

Small-group freediving instruction backed by an established Sydney team

Credibility matters most when it changes the quality of your training. Abyss combines specialist freediving instructors, a published maximum ratio of four students per instructor and a clear pathway from first certification to coached practice and advanced training.

More individual feedback

With no more than four students per instructor currently advertised, your instructor can see technique, equalisation and recovery more clearly.

A specialist instructor team

Train within a team that teaches relaxation, equalisation, finning, safety and progression—not a single personality-led program.

An established dive centre

Abyss is a PADI 5-Star Career Development Centre with more than 25 years supporting Sydney divers and a 4.9-star Google rating.

A pathway after certification

Continue through coached training, PADI Advanced Freediver and supervised ocean experiences as your skills develop.

Responsible freediving

Freediving safety starts with direct buddy supervision

Breath-hold diving carries a risk of loss of motor control, blackout, injury and drowning. Formal training teaches you to reduce risk, recognise problems and respond—but certification never makes solo freediving safe.

Never freedive alone. Use a suitably trained, attentive buddy who directly supervises each dive and remains close through the recovery period after surfacing. Do not deliberately hyperventilate before a breath-hold; it can delay the urge to breathe while oxygen continues to fall.

Freediving or scuba?

Two different ways to experience Sydney underwater

Freediving uses one breath, minimal equipment and short, quiet dives. Scuba uses a breathing system so you can remain underwater longer. If you are still deciding, compare the experiences before choosing your training path.

Questions before you book

Can a complete beginner take the PADI Freediver Course?

Yes. No previous scuba, snorkelling or freediving certification is required. You must still meet the minimum age, swimming and medical requirements, and certification is earned by completing the required knowledge, safety and in-water objectives.

How old do I need to be?

Abyss currently requires students to be at least 15 years old for the full PADI Freediver Course. Ask the team whether the confined-water PADI Basic Freediver option is suitable and available for a student aged 12–14.

How well must I be able to swim?

You must be comfortable in the water and complete either a continuous 200-metre swim without aids or a continuous 300-metre swim using a mask, fins and snorkel. The swim is not timed.

How long does the PADI Freediver Course take?

Allow about four to six hours for PADI eLearning, followed by two scheduled practical days: confined-water training and two instructor-supervised ocean sessions. Weather, site access, student readiness and successful completion of the required skills can affect the schedule.

What equipment do I need?

The current course includes use of a weight belt and weights during training. Bring or arrange a suitable mask, snorkel, wetsuit and freediving fins. Confirm rentals, sizing, costs and the current free-fins offer with Abyss before paying.

Is freediving safe?

Freediving carries risks including loss of motor control, blackout and drowning. Training teaches risk reduction, direct buddy supervision and rescue procedures. Never freedive alone, and do not deliberately hyperventilate before a breath-hold.

What can I do after the beginner course?

Continue practising with a suitably trained buddy, join coached freedive training and work toward PADI Advanced Freediver when you meet its prerequisites and are ready for more demanding skills.
