Sydney Scuba Diving: When and Where to See Iconic Marine Life

Experience the underwater wonders of Sydney! Here’s when and where to spot some of the region’s most iconic marine creatures:

• Weedy Sea Dragons: Found year-round at Kurnell, especially during calm, clear water in autumn and spring.
• Grey Nurse Sharks: Best seen in winter at Magic Point – join a double boat dive for the clearest encounters.
• Port Jackson Sharks: Common across Sydney dive sites in winter, often in large groups under ledges.

FAQs – Sydney Diving Calendar

Q: What certification do I need to join a dive?
A: Most dives require Open Water certification. Advanced dives and deeper boat dives may require Advanced Open Water. Requirements are listed on each dive. For the best time to learn? See our lessons dive FAQ

Q: Can I rent gear?
A: Yes! You can reserve gear rental online when booking your dive. See our Scuba Gear Rental page.

Q: What if I don’t have a buddy?
A: No problem! We’ll pair you with another scuba diver. Many people join solo – our guided dives are very social and beginner-friendly.

Q: What if a dive is cancelled?
A: If we cancel due to conditions or low numbers, you’ll be notified and can reschedule or receive a refund/credit.

Q: Are dives guided?
A: Yes. All shore and boat dives are led by skilled Divemasters or Instructors, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience of the underwater world. The only exception applies to technical dives.

Q: What time should I arrive?
A: Arrival time is listed with each dive. Generally, be at the shop or site 30–45 minutes before the dive start time.

Q: Are the dives single or double dives?
A: Most dives are double dives and require two tanks. In the case of shore dives, it is possible to join for only one dive — either the first or the second. If you plan to do this, please discuss with the dive centre in advance so arrangements can be made.

Q: Is transport provided to the dive site or boat?
A: Transport is not included. All divers are responsible for their own transport to and from the dive site or boat departure point. If needed, we’ll do our best to assist with carpooling options, but this is not guaranteed.
