Meet Irene Galan – PADI Instructor & Ocean Explorer in Sydney

Irene Galan is a passionate PADI Instructor at Abyss Scuba Diving in Sydney, known for her calm teaching style and infectious enthusiasm for the underwater world. Originally from Spain, Irene discovered her love for scuba diving after moving to Australia in 2021 — and she’s been diving Sydney’s coastline ever since!

Experience and Qualifications

After earning her PADI Open Water certification in Sydney, Irene quickly advanced through her training, becoming a PADI Instructor in 2024. Her background as an engineer brings a methodical, safety-first approach to every dive, while her natural empathy and patience help new divers feel comfortable and confident in the water. Irene now teaches a wide range of Learn to Dive courses and specialty programs across Sydney’s most iconic dive sites.

Favourite Sydney Dive Sites

Irene spends much of her time exploring Sydney’s diverse underwater landscape. She loves the playful marine life at Oak Park, the colourful sponges and nudibranchs at The Steps in Kurnell, and the peaceful drift dives around Bare Island. Whether she’s guiding beginners on their first shore dive or leading a fun dive with the Abyss community, Irene’s energy and knowledge make every dive memorable.

Why I Love Teaching Diving

“There’s something truly special about seeing a new diver take their first breath underwater,” Irene says. “It’s a moment of pure wonder — and I feel privileged to share that with them.”

For Irene, diving is more than a sport — it’s a sanctuary. She believes every dive is a chance to disconnect from daily life, reconnect with nature, and find inner peace beneath the waves. Her goal is to inspire others to see the ocean not just as a destination, but as a home worth protecting.
