Meet James Heap – PADI IDC Staff Instructor at Abyss Scuba Diving Sydney

James Heap is a passionate PADI Instructor and dedicated member of the Abyss Scuba Diving Sydney team. Known for his calm, confidence-building teaching style, James helps new and experienced divers alike discover Sydney’s incredible underwater world.

Experience and Qualifications

James began his diving journey in 2012 while exploring the coral reefs of Vanuatu with his family. What started as a family adventure quickly grew into a lifelong passion for the ocean. After years of recreational diving around the South Pacific and New South Wales coast, he joined Abyss Scuba Diving in 2021 to complete his PADI Divemaster certification. His enthusiasm for guiding others led him naturally into teaching.

In 2022, James became a certified PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor and soon achieved his Master Scuba Diver Trainer (MSDT) rating. He has since continued his professional development, earning qualification as a PADI IDC Staff Instructor — mentoring the next generation of dive professionals. Whether it’s helping students master buoyancy or assisting Divemaster candidates in leadership training, James brings patience, precision, and a deep respect for diver safety.

Favourite Sydney Dive Sites

James loves exploring Sydney’s diverse dive sites, from the vibrant marine life at Oak Park and The Steps to the wrecks and walls of Magic Point — where grey nurse sharks often make an appearance. He enjoys leading both shore and boat dives, helping divers of all levels experience the thrill of discovering Sydney’s underwater beauty.

Why I Love Teaching Diving

“There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing a diver take their first breath underwater and realise how much there is to explore,” James says. “I love showing people that with good training and the right mindset, diving can be both safe and life-changing.”

James believes in building confident, environmentally conscious divers who appreciate every aspect of the ocean — from tiny nudibranchs to majestic sharks. His relaxed and supportive approach helps students feel comfortable and capable, whether they’re learning the basics or working toward professional PADI certifications.

Beyond the Bubbles

When he’s not in the water, James balances his diving career with post-graduate university studies and active volunteer work with the NSW Rural Fire Service. A true outdoors enthusiast, he enjoys hiking, camping, and spending time in nature whenever he’s not teaching or diving.
