A compact dive region of wrecks, reefs and dramatic blue-water terrain
Moso’s local coral gardens and bommies are the warm-water heart of the region. MV Belama near Owen’s Reef and the deliberately sunk Trislander aircraft off nearby Lelepa add two very different wreck stories, while Hat Island and Paul’s Rock bring steeper walls, gullies and open-blue-water scale.
Visibility is commonly described around 20–30 metres and can exceed 30 metres on the clearest days. Water temperature across Vanuatu is broadly around 24–29°C, although the actual clarity, temperature, current and chosen sites change with the day.

Can I come alone or bring a non-diving partner?
Coming on your own? You can join an Abyss group without bringing an existing dive buddy. Tell us when you enquire so we can discuss buddy organisation and rooming for your departure. Guides provide group guidance; if you need closer or one-to-one assistance, discuss it with us before booking.
Sharing a room: the published Long Weekend price is twin-share and New Year is a shared-room package. Room matching, a single room, availability and any extra cost must be confirmed before booking.
Bringing a non-diving partner? Please ask our team to confirm your arrangements. We will check their place, accommodation, price and transfers for your chosen departure, plus which activities and boat outings they can join.
Where will we stay, and what is a typical day like?
Both packages stay at Reflections Retreat on Havannah Harbour. Their length, diving schedule and meal inclusions differ.
Long Weekend — four nights / five days, Thursday–Monday: arrive Thursday. The planned seven dives are spread across Friday (three, including a night dive), Saturday (two) and Sunday (two), with time back at the retreat between activities as the local schedule allows. Monday is a non-diving day before departure. Breakfasts and dinners are included, with a BBQ planned around the night dive.
New Year — seven nights / eight days: stay from 26 December 2026 to 2 January 2027, with ten guided boat dives across five dive days. A typical dive day has two boat dives, with the remaining time for relaxing at the retreat or arranging other activities. Daily breakfast and dive snacks are included; check the package for other meals and optional activities.
Daily timings, sites and the order of activities can change with weather, conditions and the group. Extra nights, flights, transfers and optional outings need confirmation for your dates.

Vanuatu works because the destination feels unmistakably South Pacific while the logistics remain manageable. The group can settle into one waterfront base on the Efate side of Havannah Harbour, within easy reach of diving around Moso, and still experience reefs, wrecks, walls and island time.

A practical overseas step from Sydney

Local Moso reefs can be bright and unhurried; wrecks add recognisable structure; Hat Island brings exposed terrain; and Paul’s Rock adds a spectacular offshore pinnacle when weather, current, access and diver experience align.
Wildlife around Havannah Harbour
Dugong opportunities differ between the two trips
Long Weekend Dive Escape: when morning tides suit, the itinerary allows for searches around Moso’s seagrass areas. If a dugong is spotted and conditions and its behaviour allow, the local team may offer a quiet surface snorkel, with four guests and one trained guide entering at a time. A search does not guarantee a sighting or a snorkel.
New Year Dive Adventure: a dedicated dugong search or swim is not included. An incidental encounter may be possible, but it is not a scheduled activity or a promised sighting.
Follow the local guide, give the animal space and never chase, crowd, touch or feed it. The diving is worth planning for whether or not a dugong appears.
Havannah Harbour rhythm
The surface interval still feels like part of the holiday
The waterfront base sits on the Efate side of Havannah Harbour, with Moso Island across the water and the region’s reefs within easy reach by boat. Morning dive plans and unhurried afternoons make it easier for the whole travelling party to share the holiday, even when not everyone enters the water.
The right format is the one whose full-day rhythm works for everyone travelling, not only the person counting dives.

What marine life might I see around Moso Island?
Coral gardens support tropical reef fish and smaller reef creatures. Turtles may be seen around Moso, with rays and reef sharks possible at suitable sites. Dugongs are a separate, occasional possibility around Havannah Harbour; the two packages offer different opportunities, described in the dugong answer. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.

Named sites include Owen’s Reef, Bottle Fish Cave, Moso Drift, Hat Island and Paul’s Rock, although the day’s plan always follows weather, current, access and the group. What visibility and water temperature should I expect?
Visibility is commonly described around 20–30 metres and can exceed 30 metres on the clearest days. Rain, plankton, swell and water movement can change it. Official Vanuatu guidance gives a broad national diving-water range of about 24–29°C, so use the operator’s current advice.
What are the MV Belama and Trislander wrecks?
MV Belama is a former Pacific island freighter resting near Owen’s Reef at approximately 20 metres. Off nearby Lelepa Island, Trislander YJ-RV3 rests on pale sand at about eight metres after being deliberately sunk as an underwater attraction. Neither wreck is guaranteed on every itinerary. Is Paul’s Rock included on every Vanuatu trip?
No. Paul’s Rock is selected only when weather, current, local access, mooring or pickup conditions and the group’s experience make it suitable. Its crown, wall, gullies and gorgonian fans make it a standout possibility rather than a promised checklist item. Read the dedicated Paul’s Rock guide.

It can be a strong first-overseas choice for a recently active diver who is comfortable with core skills and boat routines. The Long Weekend is specifically structured as an instructor-led first tropical dive holiday, while every traveller should still check certification, recency, medical fitness and comfort.
