Professional training is performance-based. The right route depends on both formal prerequisites and the confidence, judgement, communication and reliability you bring to the program.
Typical Divemaster starting requirements
The direct course is designed for divers who are already close to professional-entry readiness.
✓At least 18 years old.
✓Advanced Open Water and Rescue Diver, or qualifying equivalents.
✓Current qualifying CPR and first-aid training completed within the previous 24 months.
✓At least 40 logged dives to begin and 60 logged dives to certify.
✓A physician-signed dive medical or medical statement within the required period.
✓Recent diving, sound rescue readiness, appropriate personal equipment and professional-level attitude.
Typical Instructor Development starting requirements
The direct IDC and Instructor Internship are for divers who have already reached professional level.
✓PADI Divemaster, Assistant Instructor or a qualifying leadership-level equivalent.
✓Certified as a diver for at least six months.
✓At least 60 logged dives to start the IDC and 100 to attend the Instructor Examination.
✓Current qualifying CPR and first aid, plus EFR Instructor before Instructor certification.
✓A current physician-signed medical statement and complete professional equipment.
✓Demonstration-quality skills, strong dive theory, communication readiness and the judgement to manage students conservatively.

OWSI means Open Water Scuba Instructor. A Specialty Instructor is an OWSI who holds one or more specific Specialty Instructor ratings. MSDT recognises an instructor who holds at least five Specialty Instructor ratings and has certified at least 25 divers; it is not a blanket licence to teach every specialty.

Discover Scuba Diving: a Divemaster needs the additional DSD Leader credential to conduct the pool or confined-water experience independently. Open-water DSD responsibilities remain governed by current PADI standards.
EFR: teaching Emergency First Response requires the separate EFR Instructor rating, regardless of the scuba professional rating shown in the column.
Specialties: a professional may teach only the specific Specialty Instructor ratings held and only while meeting the applicable standards and status requirements.
MSDT: Master Scuba Diver Trainer recognises breadth and experience. It does not automatically add every specialty or replace the underlying OWSI and Specialty Instructor ratings.

After Instructor

These are later professional-development options. They should follow the main Divemaster and Instructor decisions rather than compete with them at the top of the page.
EFR Instructor
Develop the ability to teach Emergency First Response courses and complete a key Instructor-level requirement.
Occupational scientific-diver training is a separate vocational route, not simply the next PADI recreational-professional rating. Review its workplace, medical and regulatory requirements independently.

Is PADI Divemaster the same as PADI Master Scuba Diver?
No. Master Scuba Diver is a recreational recognition rating. Divemaster is PADI’s first professional-level qualification and develops leadership, supervision and Instructor-assistance capability.
Should I choose the direct Divemaster Course or the Divemaster Internship?
Choose the direct course when you already meet, or nearly meet, the prerequisites and want the focused certification route. Choose the internship when you want more regular diving, mentoring, included development and practical dive-centre experience.
How many logged dives do I need for Divemaster?
The current Abyss direct-course guidance is at least 40 logged dives to begin and 60 to earn the Divemaster certification. Ask Abyss to verify the current requirement and whether an internship is more suitable if you still need experience.
Do I need to be a Divemaster before starting the IDC?
You generally need a PADI Divemaster, PADI Assistant Instructor or another qualifying leadership-level rating, together with the other current IDC requirements. Abyss should verify your eligibility before enrolment.
Can Abyss help if I do not meet the prerequisites yet?
Yes. The right answer may be more logged diving, Rescue and first aid, a medical, skill development or the longer Divemaster Internship. A pathway review should identify the simplest appropriate sequence.
Does this page replace the current PADI standards?
