Gloomy Octopus: Sydney’s Master of Camouflage

Meet the largest octopus commonly seen around Sydney

When Sydney divers describe a big local octopus peering from beneath a ledge, they are often looking at a gloomy octopus. Also known as the common Sydney octopus, this impressive cephalopod is found on rocky shores and reefs, over rubble and sand, and around the sheltered holes it uses as dens.

The name “gloomy” comes from the scientific name tetricus, often translated as gloomy or forbidding. It does not describe the animal’s personality. A calm encounter can reveal a curious, highly responsive animal watching the diver as carefully as the diver watches it.

Unlike squid and cuttlefish, the gloomy octopus has no rigid external or internal shell. Its soft mantle and eight flexible arms allow it to crawl through reef crevices, while a siphon provides fast jet propulsion when it needs to escape.

How to identify a gloomy octopus

Colour alone is unreliable because an octopus can transform its appearance in seconds. Look for several clues together.

Large, muscular build

The Australian Museum records a body length of up to about 80 cm, while the arms can span as much as 2 m. Most animals a diver encounters will be smaller.

Mottled upper surface

Its normal appearance ranges from grey to mottled brown, but pattern, brightness and skin texture can change rapidly to match rock, algae or shadow.

Rust-red inner arms

Orange to rust-red colour on the underside of the arms is one of the species’ best field marks, especially when an arm curls out from a crevice.

Pale, watchful eyes

The eyes often appear strikingly pale or white. A pair of eyes just behind a line of shells may be the first sign that a den is occupied.

Changeable skin texture

Small skin structures called papillae can be raised to create a rough or spiky outline, helping the octopus resemble weed-covered reef.

A shell-strewn entrance

Empty crab, snail, scallop and bivalve shells around a crevice may be discarded meals, den-building material or both. Divers often call this pile a midden.

Start by looking for the den, not the octopus

Gloomy octopuses use rocky crevices, holes beneath boulders and cavities at the edge of sand or rubble. During the day an animal may remain tucked inside with only its eyes, mantle or the tip of an arm visible. At dusk and after dark it is often easier to see one moving across the reef to hunt, although daytime activity is also common.

Look for fresh shell remains

A concentrated pile is a stronger clue than one random shell on the reef.

Slow down at ledges

A well-camouflaged octopus becomes easier to see when its eye follows your movement.

Where might Sydney divers see a gloomy octopus?

They can occur across Sydney’s rocky inshore reefs. These local dive guides describe sites with the crevices, boulders, rubble and rich marine life that octopuses use. As with every wild encounter, a sighting can never be guaranteed.

Camouflage, hunting and surprisingly social behaviour

The gloomy octopus is much more than a well-disguised animal sitting beneath a rock.

A living disguise

Specialised pigment cells change colour and pattern, while muscular papillae alter skin texture. Posture completes the illusion: an octopus can flatten against reef, raise a rough silhouette or sway like seaweed.

Arms first, jet second

Most movement is a controlled crawl using eight sucker-lined arms. If threatened, the octopus can draw water into its mantle cavity and force it through the siphon for a rapid retreat, sometimes releasing ink as cover.

A shellfish specialist

Crabs and molluscs such as snails, scallops and bivalves form much of the diet. Prey is commonly carried back to a den, where the hard remains gradually contribute to the surrounding midden.

More social than expected

Gloomy octopuses are often solitary, but researchers at Jervis Bay documented dense den sites with displays, mating, chasing and den evictions. The species is flexible, not simply “strictly territorial”.

An underwater engineer

By excavating sediment and moving shells and rubble, an octopus changes the physical habitat around its den. Researchers describe this den-building activity as ecosystem engineering.

A short, intense life

Research indicates a life cycle of roughly one to two years. A female attaches many tiny eggs inside a protected den and tends them closely until the young hatch into a planktonic stage.

How to watch a gloomy octopus responsibly

The best encounter happens when the octopus remains in control. Stop, settle your buoyancy and give it time. A relaxed animal may continue hunting, rearranging its den or watching you; a crowded animal usually retreats.

Pause at a respectful distanceApproach slowly and stay off the bottom.
Keep the den entrance clearAlways leave the animal an obvious route to shelter.
Do not touch or coax it outNever prod an arm, move a shell or offer food.
Limit light and flashAvoid prolonged torch beams and repeated close flash photography.

What do NSW rules say?

Gloomy octopuses are not a blanket-protected species throughout NSW, but important take restrictions apply. NSW Fisheries states that octopus cannot be taken from ocean rock platforms or from rock platforms in Sydney Harbour. Recreational divers also cannot use scuba to take octopus, and aquatic reserves, marine parks and Intertidal Protected Areas may have stricter local rules.

Is a gloomy octopus dangerous to divers?

It is not regarded as an aggressive threat to divers and normally hides or retreats when uncomfortable. It is still a wild predator with a sharp beak, so never touch, corner or attempt to handle one.

Is a gloomy octopus the same as a blue-ringed octopus?

No. The gloomy octopus, Octopus tetricus, is a much larger species. Sydney’s blue-lined octopus is small and may display brilliant blue lines on its body and rings on its arms when threatened. The safest rule is never to handle any octopus.

Are gloomy octopuses only active at night?

No. They often hunt at dusk and after dark, but daytime activity is well documented. During a day dive you may see an octopus sitting at a den entrance or moving between shelters.

What is an octopus midden?

A midden is a concentration of shells and other hard prey remains around a den. Gloomy octopuses also move shells, stones and sediment while building and maintaining shelter, so the material around an entrance can have several purposes.

Where is the best place to see a gloomy octopus in Sydney?

There is no guaranteed site. Look on rocky reef with boulders, crevices, rubble and nearby sand, including habitat found at Bare Island, Kurnell and Port Hacking. A slow, observant dive is more useful than covering a large distance.
