Why Should Divers Own There Own Dive Mask?

A dive mask is the most important pierce of scuba gear because it lets you explore with your eyes and at the same time. You want a good quality mask that fits you well in order to maximising your diving comfort while giving you  the best viewing area possible, because you don’t want to miss anything underwater.  There is no surer way to have a miserable dive than to have a leaky mask.

A dive mask should be the first piece of gear a diver should buy and it’s important that they get an instructor to fit the mask correctly and not to buy their mask from just a shop assistant or worse still order online. Buying a cheap scuba diving mask because the price appeals is often a false economy because the mask may not last as long and a poorly fitted mask will leak and lead to anxiety and even panic in inexperienced divers.

An experienced instructor can normally select a mask to fit you face by simply looking at your face. The next step is to check for fit. To check if a mask fits well, sweep any hair off your face and gently hold the mask on your face in its proper position. There’s no need to put the strap around the back of your head. If the mask fits well, it will stay on your face when you breathe in through your nose.

Slowly and gently inhale through your nose with the mask in place. You will feel a slight suction as the air volume in the mask decreases. If the mask fits, there will be a complete seal all the way around the silicone skirt.

The mask should feel comfortable and there should be no pressure at the top of your nose in the area between your eyebrows. Again, an experienced dive instructor is key in ensuring that they mask is perfectly fitted to your face.

Your dive mask is the most important pierce of scuba gear you will ever purchase, maximising your diving comfort while giving you  the best view possible os the underwater world. All divers should own their own dive mask.
